How do I model realistic automation line behavior—changeovers, downtime, and maintenance—in automation-simulation?

How do I represent changeover schedules, stochastic downtime, and maintenance policies so your simulation reflects operational constraints.

Is there a way to configure failure/repair logic, downtime calendars, and measuring the impact on OEE-like KPIs such as availability and effective throughput.

In Simcad and Digital Twin Studio, you can use the built in Neural Network (AI) to accurately predict downtime events, duration of downtime, and expected maintenance without the use of Stochastic distributions. The Neural Network generate more accurate model representation of real life scenarios and do learn from historical data.

To model realistic automation line behavior in your simulation using Simcad, you should start by defining the changeover schedules as discrete events that trigger when a product type change occurs. This can be done by setting up changeover times and resource availability, ensuring that your simulation reflects the impact on throughput and cycle time.

For stochastic downtime, incorporate random failure distributions that represent the likelihood of equipment failure, using exponential or Weibull distributions to simulate realistic failure behaviors. You can also set up maintenance policies by defining scheduled maintenance events and their durations, which should be integrated into your simulation model to evaluate their impact on overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

To configure failure/repair logic, use the built-in features of Simcad to define repair times and the probability of success for repairs. Implement downtime calendars to represent holidays, maintenance windows, or other operational constraints that may affect availability. Finally, measure the impact of these factors on OEE-like KPIs, such as availability and effective throughput, by setting up performance metrics that capture these changes throughout the simulation run. This approach will ensure that your simulation closely mirrors the real-world behavior of automation lines.
